about

6. THE WEDDING (FEAT. PHIL CUNNINGHAM)

SU-A:

I have known Phil since the mid-90’s when he and Aly Bain came to play with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. He is an absolute legend, a multi-instrumentalist, having composed hundreds of tunes that are now absolute classics in the trad repertoire: from fiddle slow airs to bagpipe marches, and blistering accordion reels to famous TV theme tunes. He is perhaps best known worldwide for playing in Silly Wizard with his brother Johnny Cunningham, and in Transatlantic Sessions with Aly Bain. He has been on the road for 47 years. He turned professional when he was just 16.
The Wedding is a fine slow air which immediately struck a chord with me. I first heard it played on the piano by my partner Hamish Napier, who is also a huge fan of Phil’s music. It is not only an exquisite tune, but also serendipitous timing, because during the lockdown in 2020, I proposed to Hamish.

PHIL:

Over the years Su-a and I have become good friends, both socially as well as professionally, and I was very happy to invite her to play as part of the big band at my 60th birthday celebration concert at Celtic Connections in 2019. We most recently collaborated for a BBC 2-part series called The Narrow Sea, the Farther Shore, a new composition celebrating the sea between Ulster and Scotland, which both divides and connects the people.
I am absolutely delighted to dust off this tune, which I had almost forgotten about since its release on my album “The Palomino Waltz” back in 1989. No better time than now, given the approaching nuptials of Su-a and Hamish.
