about

5. STROMA (FEAT. JAMES ROSS)

SU-A:

James is a composer and pianist from Caithness on the north coast of Scotland. We originally met in 2008 when James was commissioned by two major Scottish festivals, Celtic Connections and the Blas Festival, to write a piece called Chasing the Sun for Mr. McFall’s Chamber. The 6-movement suite evoked a westward journey along Scotland's north coast, interweaving elements of folk, classical and jazz music, and we subsequently recorded it as an album. Since then, James and I have worked on several projects together and I’m always in awe of how his writing feels so connected to the soul.
Our approach to the arrangement for Stroma had improvisation at its heart. I extemporised on James’ beautiful slow jig, a tune drawn from his composer’s treasure chest of unrecorded melodies and fragments. For the central section, I sent him a few strands of improvised melodies, which James wove into the form you hear now. It all felt like such an organic process.

JAMES:

I wrote this jig several years ago and am so glad to finally find a reason to breathe life into it. It was inspired by the Isle of Stroma situated off the Caithness coast. The name Stroma comes from the Norse for “Island in the Stream” – referring to the strong tides of the Pentland Firth. I thought this melody would be a good starting point for us to collaborate, explore ideas and create an arrangement together. We worked remotely via email - sending ideas backwards and forwards over the space of several months. It was so lovely to take the time to work in this way.
