about

8. PRINCE CHARLIE’S LAST VIEW OF SCOTLAND (FEAT. DUNCAN CHISHOLM)

SU-A:

Duncan Chisholm is a true master of breath-taking Scottish slow airs as well as a composer of fiercely rhythmic tunes. It could be said that this is also true of his personality, as he has a gentle manner with people, while also possessing a wicked sense of humour. I have performed in the string section of his band for many years.
This tune is from The Simon Fraser Collection: The Airs & Melodies Peculiar to the Highlands of Scotland & the Isles, 1816. The music was transcribed, interpreted and compiled by Simon Fraser of Knockie, Invernesshire during the Jacobite Uprisings in the Scottish Highlands between 1715 and 1745. He was an Army Captain, composer and talented fiddle player.

DUNCAN:

I’ve known and performed this tune, Prince Charlie’s Last View of Scotland for many years and have always loved it. On the original manuscript there was no writing save but the title. It is a haunting and complex melody which draws out huge emotion. Obviously written by a Jacobite, it seems to me to be a very personal expression of grief from the composer, whoever they were?
Su-a brought her own personality to the arrangement and with it she gifted a freshness to this ancient tune. Recording it together was a truly lovely experience. I have known Su-a for many years now. We’ve performed together on many a stage, shared a story or two and a dram or three. I have loved every minute that I have played music with her. She is truly an extraordinary musician, a true friend and real hero of mine.
