This track features an obvious collaborator, my partner Hamish, who plays whistles, wooden flutes, piano and sings. He composes beautiful tunes inspired by his native landscape of Strathspey in the Scottish Highlands. When the first lockdown happened in March 2020, I migrated there from my usual Edinburgh base. Despite the turmoil of what was happening in the world, it was a real blessing to be able to thoroughly explore the places where Hamish grew up, as well as discover some new places together. Strathspey is truly magical.
HAMISH:
During the pandemic, I was commissioned to write a tune by Iain and Ingrid Galbraith from the Isle of Skye, for the golden wedding anniversary of Iain’s parents, Ann and Alistair, who had planned to walk the long-distance trail, the Speyside Way in 2020. The lockdown thwarted their adventure, and the new tune which Su-a and I arranged and recorded for them served as a temporary substitute. The piece was premiered live on the big day by Iain’s daughters Jos and Elsa, both of whom Su-a and I have taught.
The reel that follows was written especially for Su-a’s album and is inspired by a much shorter local route, an unnamed, unmarked and relatively unknown deer path that weaves and dips through the Scots pine and birch trees of Anagach Woods near my home. It was our favourite running route during lockdown, a place of solace and peace. The path is extra special to Su-a and me now because we planted a birch tree there in loving memory of her stepfather Rob Beasley who died very suddenly in summer 2021.
