about

2. OBLIVION (FEAT. CAREL KRAAYENHOF)

SU-A:

The bandoneón is a wonderfully complex type of concertina with a different set of buttons for each side (33 on the left and 36 on the right), and different resulting notes on the push and pull. Consequently, the player must learn four sets of keyboard layouts. It was very popular in Argentina and Uruguay and became the central voice of tango music due to its very soulful sound. Composer Astor Piazzolla was a virtuoso of the bandoneón.
In 1997 Dutchman Carel Kraayenhof came with his Sexteto Canyengue for 3 weeks to play tango music at the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh. My good friend Lise Afériat and I were performing with Mr. McFall’s Chamber, who were sharing the same bill with Carel’s group. We all became great friends and were invited to play tango with them in Holland later that year. What a thrill! The following year, when Carel was invited back to the Festival, I was honoured to be asked to organise and witness his marriage to his partner Thirza in Edinburgh.

CAREL:

Many years of friendship would follow with Su-a, while sharing a deep love for all kinds of music, and especially for Argentine tango.
One of the most cherished moments during my musical career was the day I met Astor Piazzolla, who invited me to come to New York to perform his music. Among his beautiful slow pieces, the milonga campera Oblivion is one of my favourites. A couple of years ago, I wrote a solo arrangement of it for bandoneon, based on Astor’s version for string orchestra and bandoneon.
And now, 25 years after Su-a and I first met in Edinburgh, we have recorded this heart- warming milonga together, in a new version that I have specially arranged for cello and bandoneón. Thank you so much, Su-a, for sharing your friendship and your lovely cello- playing.
