13. MAREEL (FEAT. JENNA REID)

I loved working with Jenna on her album Working Hands which won her Composer of the Year at the 2019 Scots Trad Music Awards. I was very touched that she wrote me a beautiful duet as a dedication. I have also loved working with her on fiddle-player Bruce MacGregor’s latest solo album, along with the other fabulous fellow Blazing Fiddles members. Her enthusiasm is infectious, and her passion and tone speak volumes to me.
When I asked her to choose a Shetland tune for our collaboration, she immediately picked one by her teacher Tom Anderson. I’ll never forget the moment I heard the voice memo that Jenna sent to me. She had recorded Mareel into her phone late at night after her children had gone to bed. I was myself lying in bed when the recording arrived on my phone, and by the end, I had tears pouring down my cheeks at the sheer beauty of it.

JENNA:

Mareel - n - phosphorescence seen on the sea, especially during autumn nights.

I love how delicate this tune is, so simple yet so beautiful. The recurring patterns in the melody are almost tide-like; returning again and again. I feel drawn to melodies like this - there are many tunes just like this within the Shetland Fiddle tradition. I immediately thought of this when looking for inspiration for a fiddle and cello duet, enabling us to move around the tune and find passages of harmony, using techniques like the pizzicato to weave together an arrangement, whilst supporting the melody.
It’s a joy to work with Su-a, a formidable cellist and wonderful person.
