Patsy is a tour de force of Scottish fiddle music and something of a Strathspey Queen - notable in her very recent and wonderful album with the fabulous cellist Alice Allen. Patsy is a past member of the folk band Breabach and has played on countless albums for stars in the folk world. I have been playing together with Patsy for many years: for her own band at Celtic Connections in 2014, in a trio with the talented singer and fiddle player Kate Young, as well as for numerous string sections for folk albums and performances. Whenever I arrive for a string quartet recording session for a folk album, it would invariably involve Patsy in the line-up (either on fiddle or viola) and what an absolute joy she is to work with!
This set of tunes developed in the summer of 2020 from a single Strathspey. I just knew that I wanted to celebrate her mastery of strathspeys, and secretly hope that this might have been a catalyst for her to make a whole album of them? Starting with Craig of Barns, we then added Miss Drummond of Perth, before adding a couple of reels to make up a banging set.
PATSY:
I remember my mum and I going to loads of concerts in Perth and both of us being captivated by Su-a’s wonderful playing and the sheer joy she obviously felt when performing. It wasn’t until 2010 at Perth Theatre that I eventually plucked up the courage to go up to the stage after her concert with Mr. McFall’s Chamber and Michael Marra and she was just so friendly. I’m now lucky enough to work with Su-a on loads of fab projects and it’s wonderful to see her releasing her own music and to be a part of this special album.
I was so glad that Su-a asked me to choose some of my favourite things - swingy, rhythmic Strathspeys and reels, and I especially like to cast a light on lesser-known tunes from Perthshire where I live. These tunes are some of my very favourites from the Athole Collection of the Dance Music of Scotland, a book of 870 Strathspeys, reels, jigs, hornpipes and country dances, compiled in 1884 by James Stewart Robertson of Perthshire.
John Crerar was the tunesmith for the opening Strathspey Craig o’ Barnes. He was gamekeeper to the 4th Duke of Atholl in the late 18th century and was a pupil of the legendary Perthshire fiddler and composer Neil Gow.
Miss Drummond of Perth, is also known as Calum Crubach [Crippled Malcolm]. The tune is much loved by pipers and fiddlers from Cape Breton and was collected in the 18th century by the aforementioned Neil Gow.
Mary Gray is played as a reel here, but it often gets played as a Strathspey in Cape Breton. The tune was also published as Caillach Uillam [Willie's Wife] in William Gunn's famous 1848 collection of bagpipe music.
The last reel, The Highlandman Kissed His Mother was collected by dancing master and musician Joseph Lowe. He taught music and dancing to the Royal Family at Windsor and Balmoral.

My brother-in-law Jeff Babko is an internationally renowned keyboard player. This album pushes the envelope on funk, fusion and organ trio jazz originals with some cathartic, scintillating results. Su-a Lee
