When I imagined the concept of this album, Donald Shaw was an obvious choice. We have known each other for decades and have played together in so many projects and different worlds of music. The first time was playing alongside fellow cellist Kevin McCrae (see track 15) with Donald’s band Capercaillie in the mid-90’s on board a barge on the River Clyde, with Karen Matheson, James Grant and James Mackintosh - unforgettable.
As well as founding Capercaillie, Donald is a titan of talent as a composer, producer, festival director and multi-instrumentalist.
Donald’s immediate response about a collaboration for my album was very heart- warming. He told me that he had already been thinking about writing something for me after we had played together for the Seall Festival of Small Halls on the Isle of Skye during the preceding winter. When the first lockdown eased, we were finally able to meet– thanks to our mutual friend Jane Skinner who gave us the use of her lovely large Glasgow flat and grand piano. Donald is an absolute dream to work with. He presented me with some ‘sketches’ of tune ideas. Every tune he came up with was so captivating that when it came to trying to choose only one, I just couldn’t. Instead, I came up with the idea of making a suite out of them all.
DONALD:
It was exciting thinking about what could work for cello and piano duet, knowing how we have both spent time playing together in many different genres of music for various projects of the years. I also have a real love of the harmonium which has crept in here. I suppose the title Baroque March Mull speaks for itself in that I wanted to explore a theme that sounded like something baroque in style, imagined by a trad musician from Argyll (like me).
The Gavotte Cathedral of Trees is written in a similar vein. It was inspired by a magical place in Oban called Glencruitten Cathedral of Trees, where I hung out with friends on some school days.
Malpica is a small fishing village on the north coast of Galicia in Spain where I’ve spent some time with bands over the years. It has a rugged, jagged coastline, which is probably in the character of the tune.
And finally, Ocean Poem - a name for that magical ‘whispering' sound the sea makes in the dark after a storm.
I love that Su-a found a way to thread all the pieces together.
