about

15. SOLO (FEAT. SU-A LEE)

SU-A:

I think of this as a bonus track and have chosen to include this solo as a dedication to my dear friend and colleague in the SCO cello section, who we sadly lost in 2005. Kevin was one of my best friends in the SCO and (along with SCO cellist Neil Johnstone) introduced me to Scottish folk music. They were a very entertaining pair, full of jokes (practical as well as verbal) and were always off to play cello in folk sessions. It is through these early years in the orchestra that I heard so much folk music.
As well as being a fantastic cellist, Kevin was also a very talented pianist, composer, and arranger. He wrote string arrangements for the likes of Eddi Reader, Dougie MacLean, Karen Matheson, James Grant, and Deacon Blue. He also wrote and composed full scores for Celtic Connections, SCO, RSNO, Scottish Ensemble, STV and many BBC productions.
Kevin’s compositions were full of genius and wit. I feel very lucky that he and Neil published a book of Scottish folk tunes for cello shortly before he died – it is Kevin’s beautiful arrangement of “Ae Fond Kiss” that I have decided to conclude my album with. Although it is not strictly a duo collaboration like all the other tracks, it is a meaningful nod to a dear friend and a thank you for giving me a lifelong appreciation of Scottish folk music.
A special mention here to Eric de Wit, one of my lovely colleagues in the SCO cello section, for gifting me the leather mute that I used in this last track. I think it gives the song an other-worldly quality appropriate for this particular conversation.
